U children's hospital again ranks among the nation's best
University of Minnesota Amplatz Children's Hospital is ranked among the best in the nation when it comes to treating cancer, diabetes, and kidney disorders, according to U.S. News & World Report.

$50 million gift to U of M
Children's Hospital
The University of Minnesota announced today a gift of $50 million from Caroline Amplatz, J.D., to honor her father, former University professor and medical device pioneer Kurt Amplatz, M.D. In recognition of the gift, University of Minnesota Children's Hospital, Fairview will be renamed University of Minnesota Amplatz Children's Hospital.
Wasie Foundation establishes pediatric rheumatology fellowship program
The Wasie Foundation, a Minneapolis-based private foundation, hopes to improve the ratio of practicing pediatric rheumatologists to patients by helping to establish a pediatric rheumatology fellowship program at the University. Through the legacy of Minneapolis trucking pioneer Stanley L. Wasie and his wife, Marie, the foundation has offered to provide a matching gift of $500,000 if the University can raise $500,000 by June 30, 2009, for the $1 million needed to jump-start the program.
Lucas fellowship honors pediatric cardiology leader by helping train the leaders of tomorrow
Longtime University of Minnesota pediatric cardiologist Russell V. Lucas Jr., M.D., was a great teacher and a generous man — so generous that in the 1970s he and his wife, Pat, opened their home to five orphaned children so they wouldn't have to be separated from each other. So it's not surprising that, before he died in 2001, he established a special fund for training future fellows in his profession.
Will Smith visits U of M Children's Hospital
Superstar Will Smith visited the University of Minnesota Children's Hospital December 12. In town for the Twin Cities premiere of his new movie, Seven Pounds, Smith delighted patients at the hospital and parents alike. He handed out gifts, posed for pictures, and signed autographs.

Party in the Park raises $40,000 for pediatrics
Hundreds of children and other fun-lovers flocked to the Mall of America on Sunday, November 9, for Party in the Park, an exclusive bash at Nickelodeon Universe to benefit the University Pediatrics Foundation. This year's event — which featured WCCO-TV's Amelia Santaniello and Frank Vascellaro, popular Nickelodeon characters, live entertainment, rides, and a silent auction — raised more than $40,000 to support the University's internationally renowned Department of Pediatrics and the University of Minnesota Children's Hospital,where physician-researchers develop and deliver innovative treatments and cures for childhood diseases.
Vikings Children's Fund gives $170,000 to pediatrics
Minnesota Vikings owners Zygi and Mark Wilf presented a $170,000 check from the Vikings Children's Fund to professor Joe Neglia, M.D., M.P.H., vice chair of the Department of Pediatrics, and Joel Maturi, University athletics director, during the Minnesota Gophers game on November 8. The money will support pediatric research as well as the Vikings Tackling Influenza program, a partnership between the University and Vikings that provides influenza immunizations to uninsured or medically underserved children and families in the Twin Cities.
